i refused,
proud and awkward and closed, my shoulders
curling in toward one another
my hands buckled across my knees
safety nets for those in need

i refused
the powerful pills that were
created to treat me
created to keep me fully alive
and kicking
and went on
unassisted
in that fearful living.
